This past July City of Lancaster officials requested the administration work with a newly formed coalition to complete an online application to determine if the City might qualify to be designated as a “Bicycle Friendly Community”. The City just recieved its application results and review and now the Coalition needs to move forward with a review of recommendations from the review committee. The City was not “designated” but received an Honorable Mention based on its present efforts to seek the designation. Dream Ride Projects committed resources to this initiative as our Executive Director Mike Ridgeway represented the organization as the Coalition created an organizational structure and a leadership group to establish the coalition and put it in position to continue to help the City as it goes after the bronze level designation. More information about the Coalition for a Bicycle Friendly Lancaster City can be accessed on the group’s new established Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/CoalitionForABicycleFriendlyLancaster?ref=hl .
We encourage city residents and/or anyone who works in the City to get involved in this important bicycling advocacy effort. Cities that have received this designation confirm that they are communities that support health, quality of life, air quality, and sound environmental practices, which Dream Ride Projects’ mission statement fully supports. Dream Ride Projects was designated a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Organization in 2009 and will be applying to seek a Silver designation in 2013.
