Class Description: The CYCLE SMART Weekly Bicycling Classes are based on the League of American Bicyclists Bike Ed, Kids 1 & 2 Bicycling Curriculum through an interactive and interpretive activity course. No registration is required, but Parents need to attend first class. The Bicycling Classes are supervised by League Certified Instructors, who are also Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselors & CYCLE SMART Coaches. Adults and Instructor Candidates are welcome.

Class Description: The CYCLE SMART Monthly Bicycle Derby introduces young riders and parents to the League of American Bicyclists Bike Ed, Kids 1 & 2 Bicycling Curriculum through an interactive and interpretive activity course. This Bicycle Derby reviews proper helmet fit, basic bicycle fit & maintenance, crash avoidance exercises and challenges participants and their riding skills with an interactive “off street” riding course. The Bicycle Derby activities are based on the League of American Bicyclists Kids 1 &2 Curriculum and is supervised by League Certified Instructors & CYCLE SMART Coaches.

CYCLE SMART for TOTS

Class Description: The CYCLE SMART for TOTS is a bicycling class specifically geared for the “new young cyclist” who is learning bicycling skills for the first time. “CYCLE SMART for TOTS” instructors and coaches work with participants and their parents, who are learning cycling for the first time, using training wheels, moving away from training wheels, or even using “tag-along” equipment. This Educational Class also reviews proper helmet fit, and is designed for parents with their kids. The CYCLE SMART for TOTS activities are based on the League of American Bicyclists Kids 1 Curriculum and is supervised by League Certified Instructors & CYCLE SMART Coaches.

Club CYCLE SMART
A New Bicycling Club for Lancaster County Youth!

Program Begins March 20, 2010

If you like riding your bike like we do, we invite you to join Club CYCLE SMART! Go to www.bikejournal.com and find a Club CYCLE SMART associated with your School District and follow the "log in" instructions. You don't need a fancy odometer to participate in the Club, we work on the honor system so make as good an estimate as you can and log those miles. ALL bicycling activities count, rail trail rides, mountain bike rides, competitive events, even a ride to a friend's house or to the local park or Recreation Center, you just have to Ride Your Bike! Help your School District establish a Club and compete for our Club of the Year Award.

Club CYCLE SMART is a Spring, Summer, & Fall Program supporting efforts that encourage more kids riding bikes more often!

Club CYCLE SMART partners with Lancaster Recreation Commission!
If you live in Lancaster City, Lancaster Recreation Commission is establishing a Club CYCLE SMART at some of it's 6 Parks this summer, visit the Park nearest you and ask about details. This is a pilot program so not every Park is participating. If your Park isn't participating you can still join Club CYCLE SMART above!

Club CYCLE SMART partners with Lancaster Recreation Commission!
Club CYCLE SMART and Lancaster Recreation Commission established a Club CYCLE SMART at 6 Parks as part of its the Recreation Commission's Summer Playground Program, Buchanan Park Playground Participants took away first place averaging a total of 24 miles per week per cyclists.

Coaching Program

We want you to be better qualified to teach bicycle safety... Become a one of our coaches!

CYCLE SMART Scholarships (we pay for everything!) are available for Lancaster Candidates wishing to establish a bicycling program or become a Coach for our program.

There are 3 easy steps:

  1. Become A Member of the League of American Bicyclists

  2. Attend a Bike Education Certification Course offered by the League of Lancaster Bicyclists. Email us directly for information.

  3. Become a League Certified Instructor.
    Scholarships are available. Our Coaches & Coach Candidates are a part of the League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors Program, www.BikeLeague.org.

Team CYCLE SMART
A Local Competitive Youth Cycling Team

A New Youth Cycling Team will be forming in March 2010! We are looking for young riders who want to compete in local cycling events as part of a Team while participating in community service activities and competing for our CYCLE SMART Community Service Award.

Membership
The CYCLE SMART Bicycling program is looking for Lancaster County youth who are interested in participating in local competitive bicycling events and activities as part of a Co-Ed Team. Membership will be limited to 20 members who will be committed to an entire year-round schedule of activities and competitive cycling events as well as designated community service projects. Membership is FREE and members will be responsible for a minimum community service commitment in return for use of equipment.

Team Selection
Candidates must submit a Letter of Intent as soon as possible and attend designated Team Try-Out Activities beginning March 21 and through April with training ride activities and event participation through the summerl. A minimum attendance will be required from each candidate not to exceed 6 hours per month. We anticipate Team activities will be completed by August 31 each year.

Responsibilities
Team Members will be introduced and become proficient at basic mechanics as some will "earn" their Team Bikes, they will be introduced to the bicyclist's Rules of the Road and become proficient in different aspects of training for a variety of competitive events, and they will be challenged to perform community service activities to promote bicycle education in return for the Team’s FREE Membership. Additional guidelines will be discussed during Team Try Out activities.

Tentative Schedule of Activities
Initial Team Try Outs will begin Saturday March 20.
Team Candidates must attend this first meeting and a Basic Bicycle Mechanical Class in which they will be introduced to the "Team Bicycles" and will learn how to maintain these bicycles throughout their time as Team Members (We have a fleet of Trek Road Bikes that Team Members will be issued, those candidates that actually have their own Road Bicycles will also have access to the Team Bicycles. This first Team Try Out will be held at the CYCLE CIRCLE Bike Shop, 131 N. Plum Street, Lancaster City, from 3:00 PM - 6:00PM (tentative).

March Team Tryouts are scheduled Riding Safety Education Classes on March 20 and 27 . Team Candidates will be introduced to the concepts of effective traffic cycling, competitive training methods for road racing, triathlons, and ultra-distance cycling. Guest Instructors will be experienced athletes and/or coaches in these disciplines.
 
Initial Team Activities will begin in May.
Team Members for the 2010 Season will be organized to perform a "Community Wide" CYCLE SMART Service Project on two out of four scheduled weekends scheduled on . Details of this Project will be outlined during initial Team Try Out activities.
 
Team Riding Season will begin in April.
Team Members will work together to establish both an individual and team training ride schedule that will be focused on preparing team members to participate in local, Lancaster County area competitive events involving the above mentioned disciplines. The first competitive event will be scheduled within the month of May with the remainder of the Team's Season running until September 30 (tentative).
 
Team Managers/Coaches
The Team will be managed by CYCLE SMART Coaches Mike Ridgeway and Scott Jones. Additional Coaches and Adult Assistance will be recruited.

Scott Jones is a League of American Bicyclists Certified Cycling Instructor.

Mike Ridgeway is also a League of American Bicyclists Certified Cycling Instructor, a Two-Time Four-Person Team Finisher of the Race Across America, www.raceacrossamerica.org, has circled the entire Continental U.S. Perimeter (13,000 miles), twice circled the State of Pennsylvania (1200 miles), completed two Atlantic to Pacific Ocean Cross Country Rides, all as a "self-contained" cyclist, and is presently training to compete in the 2011 Race Across America as part of a two-person team or solo competitor.
 
Additional Information 
 
In addition to sponsored "Team Bikes" the Managers/Coaches will be soliciting sponsors for additional equipment such as cycling shoes and a "Team Kit" (cycling shorts and jersey) are being designed and sponsors are being approached and secured. The time of all the Coaches and Specialty Instructors for the March Try Out Classes are being generously donated.

Team Members will be responsible for ALL registration fees associated with their participation in all competitive events, when transportation costs can be underwritten or shared by Team Members it will considered a sponsorship or donation to the Team and appropriately recognized on the Team's Web Page and any appropriate promotional materials.

Dream Ride Projects, as a major sponsor for the Team, and the CYCLE SMART Program will be developing the schedule of competitive activity opportunities available to the Team Members and in the case of events that are presented by either may waive some registration fees. This would pertain to the following events/activities; The Lancaster County Ultra-Cycling Challenges, Dream Ride Lancaster, and The Nightmare Tour and the Nightmare 100 Mile Challenge (events are being updated and added at this time so check out web site frequently).

The Team will be host to the annual Tour de Lancaster Junior Challenge in which the Team would also compete in as part of an inter-team competition and a donation drive for the Lancaster Area Central PA Food Bank. Competitors would, in lieu of any registration fee for this event, collect a designated minimum amount of non-perishable food items. (This is a new version of the Tour de Lancaster Cycling Event that has been held during the month of July (same time as the Tour de France) since 2006.
